Kyle Dempsey: Under the Radar

Kyle Dempsey, the pocket sized midfielder joined Gillingham back in 2020 and made an immediate impact, securing player of the year come the end of the season.

After just one season with Gillingham, Dempsey attracted attention this summer from a few championship clubs with Nottingham Forest being extremely keen to add the midfield man to their ranks, no bid was either forthcoming or high enough and therefore Dempsey remained at Priestfield. After knocking back yet another transfer rumours/ approach in January 2021, from league rivals Charlton this time, it would appear that with Dempsey out of contract Summer 2022, there may well be a fairly long queue for his signature. Let’s have a little deeper look behind why that may be…

As shown in the stats as well as the clip from his time at Fleetwood, Dempsey is keen to get on to the ball and is comfortable in carrying it and his team forward. A real eye for a pass, he is able to unlock a defence pin point precision, an attribute which is invaluable. If that isn’t enough then some modest contributions in goals scored as well as assists are also a part of Dempsey’s game and something which the more he plays the more he looks likely to increase.

What is next?

It would appear that Dempseys future will be outside of Gillingham, with the club currently in a relegation battle and still under elements of a transfer embargo, the attractiveness for signing an extension on his contract would appear to be very small.

A gem of a free transfer I can see no reason why a Championship club swoop in and grab themselves a bargain, who exactly?

I think between: Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United and if they secure promotion, Sunderland. All three teams suit the way that Dempsey likes to play and as his performances have already shown in a struggling Gillingham side, he would be an absolute steal of a signing for whatever team do secure him.

(Personally I want him to stay put!!)
