Taking Sides: João Cancelo vs César Azpilicueta

With Ronaldo and co. proving unreliable in recent weeks, the shift in focus turns back to defenders. Clean sheets and assists are becoming our bread and butter, but who is going to be our Mr Reliable at the back? In João Cancelo and César Azpilicueta you have two consistent performers so far this season, both tipped to produce big points in upcoming Gameweeks. Undrafted’s writers Mike and Antonio give their opinions on the situation.

Currently priced at 6.2m, I highly recommend Cancelo. He looks by far & away City’s best fullback option this season, so I feel he won’t be rotated too much. But even with the risk of rotation, I still feel Cancelo is a sit & forget option for your FPL defence. With cheap 4-4.5m backup defensive options available in Livramento, Duffy & White, even if Cancelo misses a game or two it’s not the end of the world as any one of the players above can fill in.

But when he is on the pitch, his upside for FPL points is huge. 5 clean sheets in 7 games looks like a sign of things to come for this City defence. And although he plays a different role to Trent Alexander Arnold in terms of positioning in the final third, there’s a strong argument that he could keep pace with Trents attacking output this season. He’s the standout FPL option for City this season, and in my eyes, he’s a must-have.

César Azpilicueta is Chelsea’s captain and Mr Reliable, which says it all. Since Tuchel took over, Azpilicueta has started 22 matches, more than any other of his team mates. He has also featured in all seven Gameweeks for Chelsea this term. There’s no worry with him that you’ll have to use your less desired bench options to top up your weekly points total.

Tuchel’s Chelsea have become a well oiled machine. But all their success has stemmed from their resilient defending. Clean Sheets are almost a given on regular basis. With favourable fixtures on the horizon most notably home fixtures against both Norwich and Burnley, it’s time for Azpi to hit your team and for you to reap the rewards. His versatility at the back was displayed last time out having moved to RWB against Southampton where he recorded two assists and hauled together a season high 10 points. With James having a tough time with niggling injuries at the moment, maybe this is a sign of things to come.
