Taking Sides: Ronaldo vs Lukaku

Ronaldo vs Lukaku – who is the better FPL asset? With the return of both of these powerhouses to the Premier League, the fantasy debate is in full flow and is likely to continue long into the season. Last years two most dominant Serie A players are causing a headache in FPL. Who do you choose? It’s likely to be one or the other so let’s “Take Sides” and break it down.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Cost – 12.5m

Team – Manchester United

Upcoming Fixtures: Newcastle (h), West Ham (a), Aston Villa (h) & Everton (h)

To compare the players directly, Ronaldo scored 29 goals to Lukaku’s 24 in Serie A last season. Of Ronaldo’s 29 goals, 13 were scored in 10 games against the bottom 6 teams! Flat. Track. Bully. So with an opening fixture against Newcastle, arguably the worst defence in the league, I can’t see anything other than a big FPL haul on his Old Trafford return. On top of that, three of his next four fixtures are at home to leaky defences. And it could easily be a goal-fest in the away fixture vs West Ham. Then between GW14-27, Ronaldo’s fixtures are ridiculously appealing, looking like they won’t face barely anyone towards the top end of the table. The two concerns are managing him in the tougher fixtures between GW8-13, and wondering how long it will take United to fit their style of play around him.

Taking Sides: Cristiano Ronaldo vs Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku

Cost – 11.5m

Team – Chelsea

Upcoming Fixtures: Aston Villa (h), Tottenham (a), Man City (h), Southampton (h)

Although Ronaldo bagged more goals than Lukaku last season, Lukaku managed 34 attacking returns compared to Ronaldo’s 31. The main difference is Lukaku is much more involved in his team’s buildup play, notching 10 assists last season. So now that he’s surrounded with even better talent, I expect those figures to easily translate to the Premier League. With Lukaku’s next fixture against an Aston Villa side who are missing their main goalkeeper, plus their two starting centre-backs are a doubt, it could be an absolute goal-fest for the Belgian. Then after two tougher games against Spurs & City, he has a much more appealing run of fixtures, all the way to GW20. But the cherry on the cake in this debate, he’s 1.0m cheaper. That 1.0m can be used to vastly improve your squad, whilst there’s still a real chance Lukaku keeps pace with Ronaldo in FPL.
