The Dark Horse

Everyone is always looking for the Premier Leagues Dark Horse year after year. Who will surprise the masses and have a successful season!

Who do I think the Dark Horse will be this season and why? (Drum roll please….)

So I believe that this season will be the season in which Everton reassert themselves into the top 6, a feat that they have failed to achieve since the 2013/14 season. During them 7 years alot of money has been spent, with most of it being wasted on overpriced ‘talent’, Iwobi and Kean being perfect examples of both. It also doesn’t help that Rafa Benitez will be the 9th manager at the helm since David Moyes left his post for United.

The lack of consistency and competent signings has led to mid-table mediocrity with no real signs of breaking out of that. This season will be different. Under Rafa they have already shown they are a tough opponent to break down as well as a much improved side going forward, with Demari Gray a summer signing showing exactly the kind of performances that everyone was expecting to see from him at Leicester on a consistent basis, they now have a much more complete attacking unit.

The signing of Andros Townsend is also one which may not get the headlines but I do feel the experience he brings to the side will provide a much better option than that of Iwobi or Walcott. The one other major signing which has gone under the radar due to the big name moves of Ronaldo, Grealish and Messi is that of Rondon. An already proven number 9 for a much weaker side in Newcastle, he could be deployed as either an experienced back up to Calvert-Lewin or even alongside DCL to form a dangerous partnership together.

The overall starting 11 is more than capable of breaking into the top 6 but I would say that injuries will play a huge role in their success. The squad depth is still not there and therefore they will need some Lady Luck to shine on them this season in order for Rafa to work his magic on the boys in blue.

For those who are pondering how I think the league table finishes, take a look below at my predicted top 6:

Missing from this list are West Ham, Tottenham and Arsenal (don’t all laugh at once). Now Arsenal aside I feel Everton under Rafa will sneak ahead of West Ham by 1-2 points, whilst also comfortably holding off Tottenham by 5-6 points. Arsenal I feel will finish the season 12th but I would not be surprised if this is even lower should intelligent investment not appear in January.

So there we have it, the dark horse of the season = Everton. Potentially controversial but I do feel that this is the season they right their wrongs, do you agree? If not who do you think will be the dark horse?
