The AP Top 25 always has some controversy to it, so why not create some of our own. Each week, after catching up on all of college football’s games (it takes a while), I’ll do my analysis and drop a 25 for us all to argue about on twitter… Be sure to check on me at @AlexUndrafted… you can pull me up on my excellent takes right there. I’m tweeting about college football a lot, including weekly summaries on who’s hot and who’s not, and the guys who are putting in top performances.
You can throw the rule book out on this top 25. Sometimes I feel the committee is too afraid of change. This is the people’s top 25!
(Note. Each week the + and – will be based on my previous week’s rankings, but in this weeks I’m basing them off of the official preseason top 25.
1. Alabama 1-0 (Non Mover)
Bama were not challenged by a Miami team that was meant to be pushing the top 10 this season. Ranked number 1 in the preseason, the Tide look locked and reloaded to hold the top spot. They won’t be easily knocked off their perch, and QB Bryce Young did the business in his debut.
2. Georgia 1-0 (+3)
The Dawgs defence looks like the best in the country. They had DJ Uigalelei on the ground a whole bunch on Saturday night, and held the Clemson Tigers to 3 points the whole game. You’ll have a really tough time running the ball on this team, and an experienced secondary only compliments that further. My number one ranked safety in the nation Tykee Smith, the West Virginia transfer, has yet to play. So this defence could be even better. Scary.
3. Cincinnati 1-0 (+5)
Desmond Ridder and the Bearcats deserve to be here right now more than anybody else. It’s that simple. Some of the powerhouse teams were disappointing. So nullify the fact that Cincy played Miami OH. They’re a strong outfit, and they belong here until I see otherwise.
4. Ohio State 1-0 (Non Mover)
OSU were not as convincing as I thought they’d be. But they hold their spot here, more so because the other top teams underperformed. Clemson and Oklahoma were both underwhelming, and the Buckeyes offence put together a second half performance I can get on board with.
5. Oklahoma 1-0 (-3)
The Sooners made a game out of a match up with Tulane, and almost messed around and lost it. Rattler made a couple of mistakes, and the defence let up too many points to what was supposed to be a nice ease into the season. But let’s not panic too much on Oklahoma just yet. Down to 5.
6. Clemson 0-1 (-3)
Yes they’re 0-1. Yes it’s weird to have an 0-1 team this high. But they faces likely the best defence in the country, and they’re adjusting to life post Trevor Lawrence. Not an ideal scenario to start the season. Let’s not forget they only lost 10-3. They’re still excellent defensively, and could run the table on the rest of the season, and still make the playoff.
7. UCLA 2-0 (New Entry)
We all got a little bit excited about UCLA after a heavy beat down on Hawaii. The LSU game was the one that mattered, and they went toe to toe with a ranked opponent and put them away. Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson was excellent, and their backfield is loaded. There’s weapons on this team and they’re an outfit teams aren’t going to want to face right now. The Bruins are hot. Will they stay this high? We’ll see. It’s high praise for them right now. But tell me who deserves the spot more?
8. Iowa 1-0 (+10)
One of the best performances of the week. The defence is a dark horse this season and we need to be talking about that unit more. Offensively, I’d have liked to see them score a few more points but all round? Iowa is good. A special mention to cornerback Riley Moss who had himself two pick sixes. The second of which was an excellent read and a jumped route.
9. Notre Dame 1-0 (Non Mover)
I’d have liked to have seen them give up less points to FSU, but I have a feeling FSU might be better than some of us think. The Fighting Irish are a good outfit, and Jack Coan throwing 4 touchdowns against a defence that was in his face a lot is a good sign. Plus, safety Kyle Hamilton is a star. He came away with two picks.
10. Florida 1-0 (+2)
While the Gators played against FAU, we still saw some serious talent. With two very able QBs, and freshman Anthony Richardson putting on a show when he came in, the Gators could be a run first team this season. Defensively, they look better put together than they have early in previous seasons.
11. Penn State 1-0 (+8)
Underdogs against the Badgers, Penn State travelled to their home turf and came out with a W. That’s no easy feat, and while the offence looked a little jittery at times, Wisconsin is a great defence. Then defensively? This is a very, very good group. Watch out for my man Jaquan Brisker, who I spotlighted after he iced the game this weekend.
12. Oregon 1-0 (-1)
Oregon has a great defence and played a solid game against a Fresno State team that looked good in week 0. Still some things to iron out offensively, and I’m not convinced by Anthony Brown. Let’s all hope stat Kayvon Thibodeaux is okay. He left the game and was spotted on the sideline in a walking boot. No news as of yet on that. We’ll see just how good Oregon is this week, when they face Ohio State.
13. Iowa State 1-0 (-6)
I’m thinking it was just a bit of a slow start, and that this team is still going to be very good this year. But I can’t leave Iowa State in the top 10 after scoring only 16 points against Northern Iowa. Look out for Breece Hall, arguably the best back in the nation, and linebacker Jake Hummel was excellent.
14. USC 1-0 (+1)
USC did everything they needed to do against the San Jose State Spartans. Slovis was excellent and is a guy that could easily begin to rise in stock with others like Sam Howell and Spencer Rattler making some errors. This is a team I want to see challenged to see how good they really are.
15. Texas 1-0 (+6)
The Longhorns faced a Ragin Cajuns outfit who went 10-1 last season and beat them comfortably. Hudson Card showed everything we wanted to see and running back Bijan Robinson is standout too. Texas moves into the teens here.
16. Texas A&M 1-0 (-10)
A&M drop in my rankings here because they turned the ball over too many times against Kent State. It’s Kent State. Yes the scoreline was fairly comfortable but not a top 10 ranked team for me. Not yet. Haynes King was picked off 3 times. The SEC will swallow you whole doing that.
17. Auburn 1-0 (New Entry)
Have yourself a day Bo Nix. The third year QB might have had his best college football game yet under new head coach Bryan Harsin. Nix threw 275 yards and 3 TDs, and the Tigers ran the ball all over Akron. Yes they will need tougher opposition. But this could be a different looking team and a different looking Bo Nix under Harsin’s coaching.
18. Michigan State 1-0 (New Entry)
A very impressive display from MSU against one of the most highly thought of defences in football going into this year. Michigan State ran the ball down Northwesterns throat all day, with running back Kenny Walker III finding the end zone 4 times with 264 yards of rushing. Welcome to the top 25 MSU!
19. Coastal Carolina 1-0 (+3)
Coastal picked up where they left off last season, putting 52 points on Citadel back on Thursday night. It could be another dominant season for the Chanticleers and I’d hope to see them get a top bowl game at the end of it. I want to see Grayson McCall against an SEC or a BIG10 defence.
20. Kentucky 1-0 (New Entry)
Kentucky put the SEC on notice with a stylish offensive display to kick off the season. Penn State transfer QB Will Levis went for 367 yards, 4 TDs and 1 interception. I’m looking forward to seeing them challenged by Missouri this weekend.
21. Michigan 1-0 (New Entry)
Michigan might have a quarterback… While they might not have thrown the ball too many times against Western Michigan on saturday, the offence looked… good? Feels like it’s been a long time coming for the Wolverines, and they’ve earned a spot here with a solid outing. More challenging opposition incoming however…
22. Wisconsin 0-1 (-10)
I can’t take Wisconsin out for the same reasons Clemson are still in the top 10. They faced a very good defence and looked great themselves defensively too. However the offence has work to do.
23. Virginia Tech 1-0 (New Entry)
Virginia Teach made Sam Howell look terrible, and UNC’s offensive line look like a group of freshman. UNC drop out of my top 25 here because they look like they’re going to struggle without last years weapons. Virginia Tech make the list after a great defensive display from their defensive line and experienced secondary, and QB Braxton Burmeister can play!
24. Utah 1-0 (Non Mover)
Did just enough to hold their spot in the top 25. Charlie Brewer was great minus the turnover, and the Utes go on to face BYU this upcoming weekend. We’ll see a lot more about them then.
25. Maryland 1-0 (New Entry)
Scraping in right at the last. Good for you Maryland. Taulia Tagovailoa threw the ball all over West Virginia on Saturday. He had 332 yards and 3 TDs, and the Terps ran the ball excellently too. This is a team trending upwards!
Currently, North Carolina look miles away, so they’re out, after losing their whole set of weapons offensively to the draft. Miami didn’t show much at all and I know it’s Alabama but we’re putting too much respect on D’Eriq King right now. They’re not there yet. LSU were poor enough to get dropped out although I expect to see them come back in before too long, I think they’ll figure it out. Indiana get dropped out turning the ball over too many times. Washington… yikes. And Louisiana Lafayette were no match for Texas, so theyre out too.
On The Fringe?
Three teams I like, but not quite enough yet. Tennessee, Boston College, and Fresno State. Took a loss to Oregon at the weekend but they battled hard and despite being bullied by that defensive line. They were in that game!
