Per Adam Schefter, the Rams have traded for Sony Michel with the Patriots, in exchange for two conditional late round draft picks. It’s a good trade for both sides. The Rams need the support in the backfield, and Michel was due to be a free agent at the end of the season, so the Patriots get some value for him now.
The Rams were the first victim of the off season injury nightmare when star rookie standout Cam Akers tore his achilles in training before the start of camp. Akers had 846 yards and 4 touchdowns for LA in his rookie campaign last year, and the Rams were excited about him leading the backfield in 2021. The achilles injury set the Rams plans back for a title challenging season, after acquiring Matt Stafford in a blockbuster trade with the Lions. Now, they’ve addressed it, bringing in Sony Michel from New England.
Sony Michel was an extremely talented back in his college days, coming from a long line of talented backs out of Georgia, including ex Ram star Todd Gurley, Nick Chubb, and most recently D’Andre Swift, now of the Detroit Lions.
Let’s not forget that Michel burst straight onto the scene as a rookie in New England, putting up 1,267 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, and he almost went back to back 1,000 yard seasons the following year, with 973 yards and 7 TDs. Michel has proven he can carry a load, however has suffered injuries to his foot, knee, and quad since, which ultimately led to him losing out in New England. Many have said that Michel has lost his explosiveness and burst since the injury, but he’ll have a chance to prove himself once again, this time on the west coast.
Now, he gets a fresh start, and a chance to challenge for the starting role with the Rams. Darrell Henderson can do a job but is not widely considered a starter, and the Rams add reinforcements today. An interesting development, Michel could earn starting reps. But either way, this is a low risk add for the LA Rams.
It might be worth adding Michel to your benches in fantasy, as the former Patriot is likely to get a fair few snaps in LA, and if he wins the starting role for the season, that’s a lot of upside in a good team with a rolling offence and a strong offensive line…
