Undrafted FPL: Top 5 Defenders

In this article, we’re looking at the top 5 defenders for the 2021/22 Fantasy Premier League. I’m going to predict who I think will rank highest out of the defenders this season. And thus, these are players to seriously consider for your FPL squads. As a general rule of thumb, I consider around 155 points to be the gold standard for a defender. Anything more than 170 is exceptional, and if they get less than 140 points I’d consider it a failure.

Previous Seasons

Before I list our top 5, I’ve been looking at the top-scoring defenders in FPL for the past 8 seasons, and I’ve found some pretty interesting stats and trends that I think could benefit our decision making this season:

  1. Out of the top three defenders, two came from the same team every single season. on 3 occasions, 3 came from the same team.
  2. 5 out of 8 times, the no.1 ranked defender was a fullback. Twice it was a centre-back and last season was the out-of-position midfielder, Stuart Dallas.
  3. The 171 point total from last seasons no.1 defender, Stuart Dallas, was the lowest total by the winning defender since 2012.
  4. The average score for the top spot is 185 points, the average score for 3rd is 165 points.
  5. TAA (7.5m) and Robertson (7.0m) have been in the top 3 for the last 3 seasons.

The points above indicate to me that, this season: the defenders will score higher in general; in the top 5, at least 2 will come from the same team; and the best defender has a high chance of being a fullback/wingback. So for me, targetting multiple attacking fullbacks from the top clubs is the smart decision this season. Now let’s take a look at who we’ve predicted to be the top 5 scoring defenders for the 21/22 season.

Top 5 Defenders

5. Digne – 5.5M – Everton

As I’ve said in the watchlist series, I’m expecting a big year from Lucas Digne. He has an appealing start to the season, a defensive-minded coach in Rafa, and a track record of producing attacking FPL returns with nearly 9 per season. If he stays injury-free, I think he will be knocking on the door of the elite defenders this season. Predicted points: 156.

4. Shaw – 5.5M – Manchester United

In 4th place, primed for a big season, we have Luke Shaw. Not only does he have great fixtures to start the season, but his team has also made some really impactful signings in Varane and Sancho. He will also be high in confidence after his Euro’s performances this summer. Things are set up well for the Manchester United Left back to far exceed his current personal best of 124 points, this season. Predicted points: 162.

3. Robertson – 7.0M – Liverpool

In the previous 3 seasons, he has finished 2nd, 2nd & 1st in the FPL defender rankings. That’s ridiculous. Now that the rest of the Liverpool defence has returned to full fitness, I’m expecting even more clean sheets this season. Add this to his ongoing competition with Trent for who gets the most assists, I have no doubts that Robertson is going to have another dominant FPL season. Predicted points: 177.

2. Chilwell – 6.0M – Chelsea

In 2nd place, We have Ben Chilwell. Although he’s unlikely to start the first game of the season, once he returns to the line up I’m expecting big hauls, consistently. Tuchel has improved Chelsea’s defence, Chilwell has improved his attacking output season by season, and if we combine the two, and he stays injury-free, he could be on for his best-ever points total. Predicted points: 180.

1. Alexander-Arnold – 7.5M – Liverpool

Back on top. Last season was technically Trent’s worst season since cementing his place in the Liverpool team. But he still managed to come 3rd in the defender rankings. With 2 goals, 8 assists, and 10 clean sheets, he amassed 160 points. This year, I’m expecting him to get closer to 13 assists, around 16 clean sheets with a couple of goals. If he does this, he should get close to the 200 points mark. Predicted points: 202.

Honourable mentions go to Ruben Dias (6.0M), Virgil Van-Dijk (6.5M), and Harry Maguire (5.5M) who just missed out.
