Euro 2020/21 – Team Of The Tournament

Here at Undrafted we have been following Euro 2020/21 closely and analysing performances from individual players throughout the group stage and into the knockout rounds. With the tournament coming to an end in a matter of days, it’s time to select our “Team Of The Tournament”. The Undrafted The Network writers will all choose 11 players each and explain the reasons behind their choices.

A very tough team to pick. Especially the defence. I couldn’t not pick Simon Kjaer after I dubbed him as my player of the tournament after week one following his heroic efforts involving Christian Eriksen. Bonucci and Chiellini are 34 and 36 respectively, and they have played phenomenally well this campaign. Definitely rolling back the years! Dumfries and Luke Shaw have been the best full/wing backs of the tournament so they were no brainers for me. Paul Pogba showed the world once again how incredible he is by running the show for France, an exceptional player who really needs to sign a new contract at United…I’m on my knees Paul! Wijnaldum in a Netherlands shirt is a different animal. Gets forward and scores so many for his country. Makes me wonder if Klopp used him correctly in his time at Liverpool. The front 3 pick themselves for me. The current top scorers of the competition. No matter how they go in, a goal is a goal and these 3 have done the business.

Any other 11 is just wrong, Pickford was the only one that was close to going in but Sommer was outstanding in both penalty shoot outs and in general, was a very good keeper throughout. Ronaldo as it stands is winning the golden boot, 4 penalties and 1 tap in is not getting him into the team of the tournament though. The 3 in midfield have played absolutely insane, Wijnaldum and Pogba are different players when it comes to international football and Pedri has a ridiculous future ahead of him. Forsberg arguably had the best Euro’s out of everyone and carried a bang average Sweden team to the top of their group and into the knockout stages. The biggest surprise out of all of these has been Sterling. He was absolutely shocking for most of the season with Man City, comes to the Euro’s and tears it apart. Must’ve been the rumour he was going to be involved in a trade deal with Spurs for Harry Kane. Although Mings only played the first couple of games he was absolutely insane and didn’t deserve to get dropped.

Formation: 4-3-2-1

Dumfries / Kjaer / Maguire / Shaw

Rice / Hojberg / Verrati

Shaqiri / Yarmelenko

It is a difficult tournament team to pick, because it is a choice between teams doing well or players doing well and this time I have tried to combine my efforts. There is a hint of home team bias, however the argument for their inclusion can be made.

Goalkeeper – Pickford has been magnificent in goal and he has had so strong competition, but with England yet to concede in this tournament, it is easy to see why. He has been incredible when called upon and is on his World Cup 2018 form.

Defense – Dumfries gets the nod here as although the Netherlands as a whole disappointed during this tournament, nothing happened without Dumfries knowing about it when they did attack. Kjaer is a pick based on both the emotion of his journey, showing himself as a standout person as well as a player, and the fact he has helped guide Denmark to the semi finals. Maguire has helped change the England back line since his return, nervous in the group games and yet solid and impenetrable in the knockouts. Finally Shaw only just gets the nod over Spinazzola. Both have been incredible, but I can only pick one Left Back. Shaw has matured into an incredible player throughout this tournament which is why he gets the spot.

Midfield – Rice takes the place here over Phillips as both have been amazing, but Rice has contributed more to the defensive wall of England. Hojberg is another player who has shown up defensively for Denmark and also managed to grab 3 assists. Verrati feels like the forgotten man for Italy, creating 11 chances and assisting twice, he won’t get the plaudits but he is a big reason they are where they are.

Attack – Shaqiri was like a 1 man wrecking crew in Switzerland’s attack with 1 assist, 3 goals and 9 chances created. Yarmelenko was a similar talisman for Ukraine, with anything done well going through him. Schick finally gets the place here over Ronaldo as they both scored 5, with Schick being far more impressive. Dangerous everywhere, it was sad to see him leave the tournament.
