Euro 2020/21 – Predicting Englands Line-up Vs Ukraine

Despite all the critics going into the round of 16, it’s safe to say Southgate got everything right against our archenemy Germany in what was a fabulous performance and fitting of a team progressing to the Quarter Final of the competition. From personnel to tactics England were competitive and dangerous against a strong opponent that had previously dismantled Portugal with ease.

Everything is falling into place for “Football To Come Home” but the question now is will Southgate stick with the five at the back, or twist and revert to a back four against Ukraine? Undrafted The Network writers breakdown their thoughts. Read on to see who makes their starting 11 and what formation Southgate should go with.

Jamie Evans

England Formation : 4-3-3/ 4-2-3-1

Who misses out and why?

I have cheated a bit with this line up, having seen big rumours that Jadon Sancho is now finally set to start a game at the Euros following his transfer to the biggest team in Manchester. Superb stuff. The rest however is just a guessing game/hope that Southgate is going out to win the game.

England will need all the creativity that they can find against this Ukraine outfit. I think Ukraine will just defend and try to counter on the break. This is why I predict Reece James over Kyle Walker at right back, and I have chosen Grealish over Mason Mount. For me Grealish should be the first name on the team sheet. I know he has done well off the bench, but he’s more than capable of those type of performances from the get go. Has to play.

Murray Pugh

England Formation : 5-2-3 / 3-4-3 (in attack)

Who misses out and why?

Maguire will miss out just as a precaution as he is a yellow card away from being suspended, which would mean missing the Semi Finals should England defeat Ukraine. Saka will make way for Foden just for Southgate to assess who is best to join the attack with Kane and Sterling for the Semi Final. I think Henderson will start just to see what his fitness level really is, meaning unfortunately for Phillips, he will be sat on the bench hoping he will have a starting spot should England progress.

Thomas Clapham

England Formation : 4-3-3

Who misses out and why?

Grealish, and honestly he absolutely shouldn’t but I think I know why he will. When he came onto the pitch against Germany the game completely changed, and England were immediately better. Although England have to make sure they do not underestimate Ukraine, they will have heard the comments about their route to the final. For Grealish to be at his most effect, appearances from the bench make the most sense.
