Euro 2020/21 – Most Disappointing Player Of The Group Stage

Here at Undrafted we have been following Euro 2020/21 closely and analysing performances from individual players and teams. With knockout football upon us and the Group Standings now complete we take a look back at the most disappointing player of the Group Stage. The Undrafted The Network writers will all choose one player each and explain the reasoning behind that decision.

Jamie Evans

Most disappointing player of the Group Stage  – The whole England team!

It was tough to pick just one. So I’ve gone with the whole squad. Considering England went into the tournament the bookies favourites to win the Euros, surprise surprise, the nation has been let down again with poor performances and negative tactics.

I understand England topped the group, but they should have walked away with 9pts and some more convincing wins over countries that don’t have the talent England have. Very disappointing all round. Will be a tough task to beat Germany playing the way they have been.

Most disappointing player of the Group Stage  –  Harry Kane

Undoubtedly one of, if not the best striker in the world.

But Kane just hasn’t been at the races so far this summer. Whether it’s due to the uncertainty of his club future, or failing to adapt to the Southgate style of football, it just isn’t working for the Englishman currently.

It’s tough to criticise him due to his scoring record during his career, however Lewandowski and Lukaku are still regularly finding the net for their countries.

Most disappointing player of the Group Stage  – Harry Kane

For someone who is reportedly worth 100 million plus a player or two, he certainly hasn’t looked it. Yes he hasn’t had the service he would’ve had if Trent Alexander-Arnold was in the team but he has literally done nothing other than be subbed off. Looking back at the 2018 World Cup, yes he was the golden boot winner but he scored 3 penalties, a header from a yard out and one that flicked off his heel without him knowing. Maybe that set our expectations of Kane high? Either way he looks a different player than when he plays for Spurs.

Most disappointing player of the Group Stage  – Burak Yilmaz

Maybe I have a little bit of England bias here in not joining my fellow collaborators in condemning Kane to be the most disappointing player, however I feel the service just hasn’t been there. Enter Burak Yilmaz, leading the line for many pundits dark horse in the Turkish national team. Having just recently won Ligue 1 with Lille many thought Yilmaz would help propel Turkey to shock Qualification against the likes of Italy, Switzerland and Wales. Well, he did not do that, he actually ended his tournament with a statistic any Centre Forward would soon want to forget. His yellow card total of 1, exceeded his shots on target total which was 0. When you are the main striker for your team, you at least have to hit the target.
