It might be too early to pick a Euro 2020/21 player of the tournament. But It goes without saying this man deserves it.
The whole world was shaken when danish midfield sensation, Christian Eriksen, collapsed on the pitch in their opening group game against Finland. (The full match report can be found here)
Luckily, English-born referee Anthony Taylor, stopped the game just a mere three seconds after Eriksen collapsed. It was then left to Eriksen’s danish counterpart Simon Kjaer, with a shout-out also to Kasper Schmeichel, who alerted the medics on the sidelines of the severity of the situation at hand. Kjaer started to give Eriksen CPR before the medics arrived to take over.
The scenes were horrendous to see. As the BBC decided not to cut to the studio early enough, everyone watching witnessed Eriksen receiving the defibrillator and CPR live on the pitch. Truly distressing scenes.
It was then again, that captain Simon Kjaer stepped up and gathered his whole team to make a barrier to surround Eriksen to try and give the situation some sort of privacy from the fans and the viewers at home.
Many of the Danish players were understandably in tears due to what they were witnessing. But Kjaer held his composure in a truly heroic fashion. Eriksen’s wife, Sabrina Kvist Jensen, made her way down to the pitch and was visibly distraught at what was going on. Kjaer stepped up again to console her on the side of the pitch, again covering her from the cameras that were still rolling.
It’s due to the actions of Kjaer especially, and the rest of the Denmark players, that I am writing this piece in relief that Christian Eriksen is recovering well in hospital. They saved his life.
So this is dedicated to you Simon Kjaer. A true hero. My Euro 2020/21 player of the tournament.
