Taking Sides: Phil Foden vs Mason Mount

With Euro 2020 on the horizon, there has been a lot of debate about who is England’s best young talent. Phil Foden and Mason Mount are probably two of the best in the world at what they do, but which of the two is the better player? Read on as Chris and Jamie lock horns.

Phil Foden

The Stockport Iniesta. That says it all. What a player. It pains me to say it as a United fan, but boy, I love watching this lad play football. I don’t know if I am jumping the gun early or whether or not it’s well known by now, but Foden is world-class.  The way he can dribble and bounce off players is very Messi-esque and his incredible balance and agility allow him to ghost past players like they’re not even there. He can also score goals. He has it all. A joy to watch.

For me, Foden was the stand-out City player this season and deservedly won the PFA Young Player of the Season award. I also believe he outshone KDB (As did a few others). He is the future of Manchester City and the future of the England national team. I can’t discredit Mason Mount too much considering he has had a very good season. But if I were to pick one must starter out of those two players, It’s Phil Foden without a shadow of a doubt. I’d also argue I’d pick Grealish ahead of Mount also but now isn’t the time. Phil Foden future Ballon D’or winner. Simple as that.

Over to you Chris!

Preferred Position – Attacking midfielder / Central midfielder

Mason Tony Mount. The perfect footballer.

Want him to play defensive midfield? Not a problem, he can do it. Box to box? Consider it done. Attacking midfielder? No issue. He can do it all. Recently voted Chelsea’s player of the season, Mason Mount has talent in abundance.

One argument that is always looked upon when discussing Mount and Foden, is the statistics. Yes, Foden has the better stats. But don’t forget that he plays attacking midfield in a team that scores goals for fun. You put Mason Mount in the same squad, and he’ll rack up better statistics than Foden. Mount was always considered a love child of Frank Lampard, apparently the reason why he played so much. However what doesn’t get brought up, is that Mount has played well over 200 professional games, across 3 divisions and becoming a regular for his nation.

So not only is Mason Mount Chelsea’s best player and an England starter but he is also a Champions League Winner. Did I mention he’s just 22? There’s no doubting that Phil Foden is world class, but Mason Mount can do it all, and does it in such an effortlessly fashion.
