Euro 2020/21 England Squad – POV Gareth Southgate

On the 25th of May, England manager Gareth Southgate will be naming his 26 man squad for the upcoming Euro competition. In this article, I will be trying to guess the 26 men that Southgate will choose. Then at the end, I will place my 26 man squad based on who I think should be going. Enjoy!

Southgate’s choices…

Defenders: Harry Maguire, John Stones, Tyrone Mings, Eric Dier, Kyle Walker, Reece James, Kieran Trippier, Luke Shaw, Ben Chilwell, Bukayo Saka

Midfielders: Jordan Henderson, Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Mason Mount, Jude Bellingham

Forwards: Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Harry Kane, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Ollie Watkins

Who misses out?

The biggest omission will be Trent Alexander-Arnold. Gareth Southgate just isn’t a fan of the young Liverpool star, proving that by leaving him out of the last England squad in March. Southgate is a big admirer of Kieran Trippier, and with Kyle Walker having a solid season at City and being able to play centre back in a back 3, those two will be in the squad. I also think Southgate will take Chelsea full-back, Reece James, over TAA. With James being confident going forward and defensively, that will be in Southgate’s mind when selecting his squad.

Another one is Mason Greenwood. Stellar end to the season for Manchester United, adding more than just goals to his game. If England were needing a goal, or someone else to fill in any of the positions in that front 3, I’d be taking Greenwood.

Nick Pope is unlucky to miss out due to injury, the three keepers were pretty much the only ones that were 100% locked in. But that allows Sam Johnstone the opportunity to step in, following a very good, yet busy, season in West Brom’s goal.

Finally, another one who will be unlucky is Everton’s, Ben Godfrey. Godfrey has played across every back four position for the Toffees this season and has produced some really consistent performances. He would make my team over Mings and Dier easily. Shoutout also to Ezri Konsa who has been superb for Aston Villa.

Who shouldn’t be going?

If I am accurate with my predictions, then there are a few players lucky to make it. Kieran Trippier would be one, I’d take Alexander-Arnold over him if anyone. Eric Dier will be a laughable choice considering he has had a torrid time for Tottenham this year. Another one that will be lucky to go is Ollie Watkins, although I am a fan of his work rate, I think Patrick Bamford has had a better season and should get the nod ahead of the Villa man. But I’d take Mason Greenwood over both.
