This is my mock draft for the 2021 NFL draft, this is my favourite part of the NFL season seeing what teams will get all these talented college players.
1. Jacksonville Jaguars – Trevor Lawrence (QB – Clemson)
No need to over complicate this pick for the Jags, Lawrence is the obvious choice for new head coach Urban Meyer. He’s about as close as anyone can get to the perfect prospect and is probably the best Quarterback out of college since Andrew Luck. This should be the main piece the Jags need to start heading in the right direction with young talent all around the team.
2. New York Jets – Zach Wilson (QB – BYU)
In my opinion this is the only other pick that is guaranteed. According to reports Wilson hasn’t just been doing his research for being an NFL quarterback but a quarterback in New York specifically. Wilson has apparently been in talks with Mark Sanchez, Chad Pennington and Josh McCown all former Quarterbacks for the Jets in order to find out what it’s like to play there. Wilson for me shows similarities to Mahomes when he came out of Texas Tech and i think he has an enormous ceiling.
3. San Francisco 49ers – Trey Lance (QB – North Dakota State)
This is where the draft starts for me as no one is too sure what the 49ers plan to do. Originally i assumed this would be Justin Fields who i think should be the pick here however according to reports the 49ers are between Lance and Alabama’s Mac Jones. In this scenario Kyle shanahan gets Lance who has a much higher ceiling than Jones. Although Jones would probably be a better day 1 starter, the potential that Lance has cant be passed on. Letting Lance sit behind Garoppolo will allow him to learn the system and would be perfect.
4. Falcons – Kyle Pitts (TE – Florida)
This is definitely a potential trade down spot for Atlanta however Pitts is a massive upgrade and is probably the most pro ready player to add to a team. I see them taking Pitts as an easy player to take for first time head coach Arthur Smith. Every one knows what an incredible talent Pitts will be at the next level. Defenses will struggle to deal with him, Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley.
5. Cincinnati Bengals – Ja’Marr chase (WR – LSU)
The Bengals could go one of two ways here they can either take Penei Sewell to protect Joe burrow or they can reunite Burrow and Chase. The two paired up for 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2019 so it will be hard for head coach Zac Taylor not to select Chase in order to try and recreate similar numbers. Another reason i have chosen Chase is because its a very deep class in terms of offensive line.
6. Miami Dolphins – Jaylen Waddle (WR – Alabama)
In my opinion the best receiver in this years class and the Dolphins are able to trade down and still get an incredible weapon for Tua Tagovailoa. Adding Waddle will allow the Dolphins to see if Tua really is the way forward for them as they have done a great job at surrounding him with talent.
7. New England Patriots (Via the Lions) – Justin Fields (QB – Ohio State)
The Patriots who don’t normally trade up spot the opportunity to grab their franchise guy here at number 7. The Patriots would more than likely send away pick 15 this year plus a third rounder this year and their first round pick next year. Allowing Fields to learn from Cam Newton would be perfect, An incredible talent who dropped slightly due to epilepsy and some potential character concerns. Could this be the start of the future of the new Patriots dynasty?
8. Carolina Panthers – Penei Sewell (OT – Oregon)
I would love to have the Chargers trade up to take Sewell here to reunite him with Herbert however the Panthers have very similar needs to the LA so i cant see them giving up Sewell. This works out perfect for the Panthers as they get arguably the best player available on the board at a position of need for them.
9. Denver Broncos – Mac Jones (QB – Alabama)
For me George Paton will want to spend his first ever pick on the most important position and get his potential franchise guy. It is clear that the broncos are not keen to move up to take a quarterback so in this scenario they wait and still get a talented quarterback. Although some people aren’t that convinced with Mac Jones he seems to be loved by lots of NFL teams so I think the Broncos have to take him here.
10. Dallas Cowboys – Patrick Surtain II (CB – Alabama)
Back to Back Alabama players go off the board here, a player who fills a huge position of need for the Cowboys. The only other player who I think this could be would be Jaycee Horn however Surtain seems like a much safer pick. It’s tough to guess who Jerry Jones will want to draft as he likes to be talked about so don’t be shocked whoever he drafts.
11. New York Giants – Micah Parsons (LB – Penn State)
Joe Judge attended two pro days Parsons and Jaelan Phillips so they take Parsons here who is an excellent run defender and blitzer. He is such a physical specimen and helps fill a position of need for the Giants. Other than Philips the only other player I can see the Giants taking would be Heisman winner Devonta Smith however they decide to go defense in this case.
12. Philadelphia Eagles – Jaycee Horn (CB – South Carolina)
This has to be the pick if he is available as they were a disaster in the secondary even though Darius Slay is a great player, not only is he ageing but he needs more help. There could be an argument for receiver however Horn is just too good of a player for the Eagles to pass on.
13. Los Angles Chargers – Rashawn Slater (OT – Northwestern)
The Chargers got their franchise guy when they selected Justin Herbert with the Sixth overall pick so its time to protect him. They get great value for their pick here getting in my opinion the best day one offensive lineman in the entire class. It may not be the flashiest pick however the Chargers are a team on the rise and the only way they will continue to rise is if Herbert is healthy.
14. Minnesota Vikings – Alijah Vera Tucker (OT/G – USC)
Vikings get the solution to their problems upfront as Tucker can play wherever he is needed. I did think about giving the Vikings a pass rusher here is they do not have much other than Danielle Hunter however i decided that giving them a versatile player who is a solid run blocker and an excellent pass blocker.
15. Detriot Lions (Via the Patriots) – Devonta Smith (WR- Alabama)
This works out perfectly for the Lions as they are able to trade down all the way to 15 and get the player they would’ve taken at 7. The Heisman winner has fallen here and the Lions stop that fall, if Detriot are going to try and maximise Jared Goff then they will need a playmaker like Smith for him to throw to.
16. Arizona Cardinals – Greg Newsome II (CB – Northwestern)
I originally had the Cardinals taking Farley however they pass on him due to obvious injury concerns, The 6’1 Corner prospect would be a great add for the Cardinals who only really have Byron Murphy at corner. This could also be the spot for a running back to go off the board however I think running back is an extremely replaceable position and I don’t think Arizona take one here.
Check out this mock from Alex to see where he thinks everyone will go!
17. Las Vegas Raiders – Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (LB/S Notre Dame)
The Raiders get an incredibly versatile athletic player that they can use similar to how their divisional rivals the Chargers use Derwin James. I am not saying he will be as good as James however there’s no reason why he can’t be in that conversation in a season or two. After the Raiders somewhat demolished their offensive line I did consider giving them Christian Darrisaw however I think Koramoah is too perfect for them.
18. Miami Dolphins – Jaelan Philips (ED Miami)
In my opinion the Dolphins are the hardest team to draft for at 6 and 18 as they have a pretty solid squad all round. Although I like the story line of keeping Philips in the area. Also giving the dolphins a pass rusher to help try to take down the likes of Zach Wilson and Fields and Josh Allen who are all fantastic runners. He’s the best edge in the class for me and would go much higher if his history with injuries wasn’t such a big concern. I’m happy with this pick here.
19. Washington Football Team – Christian Darrisaw (OT Virginia Tech)
Washington don’t manage to get a quarterback in this scenario here so they go best player available and stop the small fall of Darrisaw. He earned the highest PFF grade for an offensive tackle in the power 5 in 2020 as he did not allow a sack or hit.
20. Chicago Bears – Teven Jenkins (OT Oklahoma State)
Back to back tackles go off the board here and although they aren’t able to get a quarterback they are able to get a lineman who will definitely help improve David Montgomery. I did briefly consider receiver however Darnell Mooney is an absolute beast who would’ve been just as good as Justin Jefferson if he had a decent quarterback.
21. Indianapolis Colts – Caleb Farley (CB Virginia Tech)
The Colts take a chance on Farley who in my opinion minus the injury concern is the best corner in this class. Yes they do need to address tackle after losing Anthony Costanzo however this class has great offensive linemen down the board.
22. Tennessee Titans – Rashod Bateman (WR Minnesota)
The Titans have got to add another weapon after the loss of Jonnu Smith and Corey Davis. They get a 6’2 monster here to go alongside AJ Brown who will no doubt make their already elite offensive even better. The only concern I have with Bateman is that he doesn’t quite have ideal speed however I still think he will be a great player on the outside.
23. New York Jets – Azeez Ojulari (ED Georgia)
I know the Jets have no one at Corner however they have to hope they can draft someone to play there at the top of the second round. Ojulari is the definition of a perfect fit for the jets as he can rush the quarterback from any stance. He is a fun player to watch as he plays with an incredible motor and is someone who doesn’t stop.
24. Pittsburgh Steelers – Liam Eichenberg (OT Notre Dame)
Steelers lost key parts of their offensive line, If it wasn’t for injury concerns I would 100% be taking Landon Dickerson to start at center right away. Although getting a tackle definitely won’t do them any harm.
25. Jacksonville Jaguars – Trevon Moehrig (S TCU)
Jags have a massive hole at safety with their best player there being Andrew Wingard, Here they get the best safety in the class. I think Moehrig will be great in the league and would be best if he’s allowed to play an over the top role similar to what Earl Thomas used to play like.
26. Cleveland Browns – Christian Barmore (DT Alabama)
The addition of Clowney on the edge and Barmore in the middle along side stud Myles Garrett is a scary pass rush. The Browns lost their defensive tackles in free agency so adding a guy who could potentially be a star due to to his physical ability is perfect. This should allow the guys on the edge to get consistent one on ones.
27. Baltimore Ravens – Terrance Marshall Jr (WR LSU)
This has been who most people have the Ravens taking and for good reason. I was going to give them Kadarius Toney from Florida however the Ravens already have Marquise Brown who is a similar sort of player. Adding 6’3 Marshall would be a great change of pace to the Ravens offense.
28. New Orleans Saints – Erik Stokes (CB Georgia)
Other than Marshon Lattimore the Saints have no one else to play corner, Stokes has a great football IQ and does a great job of reading the quarterback’s eyes. He also does a great job when in man as he uses the sideline to his advantage.
29. Green Bay Packers – Landon Dickerson (C Alabama)
Packers have to replace Corey Linsley after losing him in free agency. This is an easy swap here as they draft Landon Dickerson, as said previously he struggles with major injury concerns. He will be a great day one starter for Green Bay.
30. Buffalo Bills – Kwity Paye (ED Michigan)
The Bills take the best player available here to add to their defensive line to go alongside Ed Oliver. Paye could get a bit better as a pass rusher however he is a excellent run defender who plays with great technique.
31. Baltimore Ravens – Jayson Oweh (ED Penn State)
Although he didn’t record a sack last year he is a physical specimen who does a great job at creating pressure consistently. At 6’5 250lbs he ran a 4.37 40 time which is insane so if the Ravens draft him it might be that extra piece they need to make a run for the superbowl.
32. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Jamin Davis (LB Kentucky)
In this mock draft the Bucs take an instinctive linebacker here as another fantastic piece to add to their already stacked defense. Davis tied the record for the high jump for an off the ball linebacker pairing him up with Devin White would be dangerous.
Would you be happy if this is how the draft played out?
