Who Should Play 10 For The Lions?

Wearing a Lions jersey is something that every British kid who loves rugby dreams of doing. Every year fans watch as a team is selected from some of the best players in the world. So who should play 10 for the Lions? Its a tough question to ask. The number 10 jersey is an important role for any team as they control the tempo of the attack so making the right selection is vital. Gatland has so many talented 10s at his disposal right now, making it hard to predict who he’ll pick! Here are his options:

Owen Farrell

While playing inside center for England there is still a chance he can play 10 for the Lions, despite his poor form recently. A fantastic game manager and a potential captain for the team, Farrell plays good rugby and is a fantastic goal kicker. Although his cards haven’t been as frequent as they once were, for me there are still concerns there. My concerns are due to his tackle technique. Having Lions experience will go in his favour when it comes to the decision, although he’s not who i would go for.

Dan Biggar

Biggar is an incredibly smart rugby player who has had a great run of form recently, and has just led Wales to a six nations win. A survey was taken in which the Welsh fans voted, and It was not Dan Biggar who they would want to start at 10. In fact each nations fans all agreed on one player apart from England. They thought Farrell should start ahead of anyone else even though he’s more of a 12 now. Biggar is such a great running threat which is a major bonus to the team, and despite the fact that I think Biggar will go on the tour, I just can’t see him starting. He does help to add experience to the team, so i’d expect to see him make the squad.

Johnny Sexton

Sexton is another player with Lions experience who in my opinion is the second most likely to start at the 10. In Sexton, you have another fantastic game manager and a great goal kicker. I do have my concerns with Sexton though as i feel he gets drawn in around the ball too much and becomes easily distracted. It’s one thing that Italy’s Paolo Garbisi does to perfection as when the forwards are working in pods half of the time he isn’t even looking as he is organising his line. Sexton is fantastic in every other area so i would not be shocked at all if he gets the start. He’s a strong contender to don the 10 as the tour approaches.

Finn Russell

When given the chance to vote, every nations fans other than England’s agreed that Russell should get the start. To put it simply, on his day Russell is the best at what he does. It’s hard not to love the way he plays which is why for me he should start. Russell is my pick for this years number 10. To beat the springboks the Lions will need to play fast running rugby and who else to orchestrate that than one of the most creative players in the world?
