Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21
Welcome back everyone! Week 4 already can you believe it! Lockdown has definitely hit home that live sport cannot be taken for granted anymore.
Looking back at my predictions from week 3. Erm….yeah what a shambles. This is going to be harder than I thought. With no pre-season we really are seeing a mixed bag of results and some odd performances.
Out of 10 games across the weekend I got 5 correct results and no correct scores, meaning we ended with a measly 5 points out a possible 30. That’s 3 points worse off than the week before. The most frustrating result of the weekend was the fact I had Brighton to beat Manchester United. How they didn’t win is beyond me because Brighton were so dominant in that game.
Don’t get me started on Chelsea, City and Wolves!
The special undrafted mention this week goes out to Jamie Vardy for his hat trick against Manchester City.
A decade ago no one had heard of Jamie Vardy. What a truly inspiring career this guy has had, from playing conference football at Fleetwood Town to winning a Premier League at Leicester in the space of 5 years.
Chelsea v Crystal Palace – Saturday 12:30 Kick Off
Get your act together Chelsea! 3 nil down against West Brom in the first half….ridiculous! I know we ended up drawing 3 – 3 and the comeback showed great character, but they should never find themselves in that position in the first place. Chelsea can’t expect to carry on defending the way they have been if they have any hopes of challenging for major honours this year.
Lampard will be aiming to return to winning ways this time out in the Premier League when Crystal Palace visit Stamford Bridge. It’s the blues first London derby of the year and should be more straightforward compared to West Brom last week.
Personnel wise I can seeThiago Silva coming back into the side. He had a mixed debut with one costly error but other than that looked very assured. Hopefully this week he finds his feet and a regular partner, because I believe he can be great for us.
Crystal Palace, on the other hand, have been having their ups and downs since the start of the season. Roy Hodgson’s men, though, experienced all sorts of problems at the back in a 2-1 loss to Everton.
Even though the Eagles always keep things pretty tight I think Chelsea this season are more equipped to dealing with these types of opponents and should have enough to break them down.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Chelsea to win 2 – 0
Everton v Brighton – Saturday 15:00 Kick Off
The way the Toffees have started the season, top four must be the goal. I say it week in, week out but Carlo Ancelotti is building something special at Everton. He’s a great man manager and you can see the impact first hand with Dominic Calvert-Lewin who has spoke out about the help his manager has given him in elevating his game. The guy just cannot stop scoring, get him in your dream teams before it’s too late!
There’s no doubt, the new signings have majorly helped the team improve their game. James Rodriguez is carving open Premier League defences like there’s no tomorrow. It’s safe to say no-one wants to play Everton at the moment though as they aim to keep their 100% record intact.
Brighton have genuinely been very, very unlucky this season. Should have beaten Chelsea and definitely should have picked up 3 points v Manchester United in their last league game. They look potent going forward without the end product. If they can turn all the chances they are creating into goals then there’s no reason they can’t finish in the top half of the table.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Everton to win 3 – 1
Leeds v Man City – Saturday 17:30 Kick Off
I know you have Tottenham v Manchester United this weekend but this is the pick of the bunch for me! What a fascinating encounter at what feels like a really important stage already in the title race for Manchester City.
The two managers have a lot of admiration for one another and it’s going to be interesting to see how both teams approach this game.
Manchester City took a 5 – 2 ass whipping against Leicester, which was the complete opposite of what I predicted. Maybe I should have though. It seems as though teams have worked City out now. They look unprepared and too predictable, which is most unusual for a Pep Guardiola team. Don’t be surprised this week to see a change in tactics/formation as Guardiola looks to freshen things up and return to winning ways.
Marco Biesla’s Leeds have been one of my favourite teams to watch this season. The players seem so fit and just run themselves into the ground every game. Obviously this must take it’s toll as the season goes on but for now it’s great to watch.
I’m almost obliged to go with a Leeds win here, don’t judge me. City are missing key players in Aguero and Jesus upfront, meaning Sterling will be most likely deputising. City never look great without an out and out striker. Leeds will cause them lots of problems going the other way as well.
I am expecting it to be a very good game. They’ll be no sitting back from Leeds it’s not in their DNA.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Leeds to win 2 – 1
Newcastle v Burnley – Saturday 20:00 Kick Off
Newcastle have been using all their luck for the season up early doors this year. Firstly, with the last-gasp penalty to draw with Tottenham which ended up being their only shot on target in the dying seconds of added time. Then to get past League Two side Newport via a Penalty shoot-out in the cup.
I don’t think they’ll need luck this time out as their injury hit opponents Burnley are struggling to get anything going this year. Sean Dyche has tried to persuade the board he needs new players why the transfer market is still open, but it doesn’t look like anything has materialised as of yet. Maybe a third defeat on the trot in the League will be enough to persuade the board to get the credit card out.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Newcastle to win 2 – 1
Leicester v West Ham – Sunday 12:00 Kick Off
Leicester City are flying. Jamie Vardy is flying. Both will be brimming with confidence after smashing Manchester City 5 – 2 in the last league game. The Foxes are eyeing their fourth consecutive win of the season against West Ham, and they are likely to stick to their attacking style of play.
West Ham got their first win of the season against Wolves last weekend with an impressive result. They deserved it, played some great football. I do think they’ll change the tactics up for this one and park the bus to deny Leicester the space to run into. This is the only way I see them getting any success here.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Leicester to win 2 – 1
Southampton v West Brom – 12:00 Kick Off
The saints are up and running. Hasenhüttl praised his sides defence after their first win of the season. He knows it was a big win because if they had lost he would have been under pressure early into the season. Danny Ings makes the difference for them week in week out and its great to see him back at the top of his game.
West Brom meanwhile, were amazing against Chelsea in the first half. I was genuinely shocked with how they started that game. As the game went on though they got penned in and could not get out of their own half. But Slaven would have taken a point before the game, so now they can build on this and hopefully work towards staying up this season.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Draw 1 – 1
Arsenal v Sheffield Utd – 14:00 Kick Off
The Gunners are playing really well and producing some fine displays under Mikel Arteta so far this season. They got beat by a very, very good Liverpool team Monday night but they played well and were unlucky not to come away with anything out of the game. They seem to be defending as a whole team something Chelsea need to start doing.
Sheffield United I worry for. No points so far and some pretty poor displays. Who’s going to get all the goals for them? Is Rhian Brewster the answer for £23 million – I’m not so sure! They’ve got Championship level strikers currently who last season we’re playing to their maximum potential and getting the job done. This season they haven’t hit the same heights and Chris Wilder will know more than anyone they need to start scoring goals to stay in the Premier League.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Arsenal to win 2 – 0
Wolves v Fulham – 14:00 Kick Off
Wolves had a blip v West Ham at the weekend and they have been struggling for their best form. But I don’t see this game giving them too many problems.
The Cottagers are bottom of the table with three defeats from three with a total of 10 goals conceded. My school mate Dan Is a massive Fulham fan and he text me the other day saying “can you stop shitting on Fulham”. I wish I could but they have been so so poor. Their performance against Aston Villa was actually laughable at times, some of the defending on show was terrible and I know that’s rich coming from a Chelsea fan.
‘I’m more certain of Fulham going down than Liverpool winning the league. What we saw there was actually unbelievable.’Jamie Carragher – Live on Sky Sports
I must say I agree with Jamie Carragher. There’s never been a more ‘Dead Cert’ than this. I really like Scott Parker as a manager and he seems a genuinely top bloke so I’m hoping the board back him and bring him some reinforcements in before things get too ugly. That’s all I’m going to say on the matter.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Wolves to win 3 – 0
Manchester Utd v Tottenham – 16:30 Kick Off
This should be a great game!
Tottenham looked really good against Newcastle and somehow ended up drawing thanks to a ridiculous hand balling decision. It’s started getting Spursy already!
Jose has been complaining about fixture pile-up and to some degree I do see where he is coming from, but this is why he’s paid the big bucks. Getting Dele Ali out of the dark and new signing Gareth Bale off the injury reserve list would be a good start and a way of freshening up the team sheet.
Manchester United, on the other hand, are struggling to keep the goals out. Common theme around the Premier League at the minute. The lack of protection in front of the back four was really astonishing against Brighton. Like I said last week, they need to add some pace to help out at the back but they also really need a player like Ndidi who clears up and snuffs out danger. Solskjaer needs to find a better balance in midfield because they are definitely great to watch going forward but going the other way it’s too easy.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Manchester United to win 2 – 1
Aston Villa v Liverpool – 19:15 Kick Off
Last but not least, Liverpool v Villa.
Jurgen Klopp has turned Liverpool into a well oiled machine. They all know their jobs and they have refocussed after lasts years triumph. They don’t need to be playing well and they still find a way to win. Maybe Klopp can make up with Lampard and let him know the formula to do this.
Villa will stay up this year without the stresses of a relegation battle. With two wins already they have made a great start to the season and 6 points on the board. This game will be one too many for them though, as Liverpool are relentless at both ends of the pitch.
