Premier League Predictions 20/21 – Week 3

Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21

Welcome back everyone! Getting in the swing of these Predictions now and really enjoying writing them.

Looking back at my predictions from week 2 it was a mixed bag really. Out of 10 games across the weekend I got 5 correct results and one correct score in the Arsenal v West Ham game, meaning we ended with a total of 8 points out a possible 30. On the whole pretty happy with that, with just Man United, Newcastle, Chelsea (obviously course they would be on the list) and Aston Villa games letting me down. Solid start, just need more correct scores to boost the points!

Special mention this week goes out to Son Heung-min with an absolute master-class of how to finish your dinner in the second half against Southampton. What a player 🔥

Brighton v Manchester United – Saturday 12:30 Kick Off

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be feeling the pressure this year. The Manchester United board will have tasked him with cutting the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City whilst trying to win a trophy in a domestic cup. The Red Devils failed to make a flying start to the season last weekend, which Ole would have been hoping for. A shocking 3 – 1 loss to Crystal Palace was not what the bookmakers expected, but I wasn’t surprised.

Maguire and Lindelof lack pace and when you’ve got no protection in front of them with Matic missing and Zaha running wild, you do worry. Ole may look at addressing this partnership, with the transfer window still open. If you look down the years the best defensive partnerships have combined one fast/pacy centre back who can provide cover for balls in behind with one positionally great, slower centre back.

This 3 – 1 loss may provide the kick up the backside that Manchester United need, so don’t be surprised to see Ole’s side produce a much better performance this time out. With some great individual players available in their ranks, they can really make the difference on their day.

Brighton, on the other hand, have had a great start to the season. Their performance in the game against Chelsea on the opening day should not have been overlooked, as they could have easily won that game had their finishing been better. They got an excellent win this weekend against Newcastle, creating plenty of chances again, which is a really sign of how they have evolved from last season. I really fancy them getting a result at home, against a struggling Manchester United side.

Crystal Palace v Everton – Saturday 15:00 Kick Off

Expect some goals in this game!

Palace have impressed me the most since the start of the season. I actually had them down to be relegated this season as laid out in week 1’s predictions. We all know this form will tail off at some point, but whilst they’re sitting pretty with two wins in two games they deserve all the plaudits.

Palace have shown they have an eye for a goal, having scored 3 last time out against Manchester United. They’ll be high on confidence going into Matchday 3, and with Zaha showing why he deserves the chance to play for a top team again with his performances they have every chance of getting something out of this game.

Everton are in good hands with Ancelotti at the helm. Having a manager of this magnitude really has given everyone the boost. All the summer signings have been very influential so far! it is clear that Everton have upgraded their team with their summer signings. James Rodriguez oozes class and, up front, Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are an absolute handful.

West Brom v Chelsea – Saturday 17:30 Kick Off

Chelsea suffered a heart-breaking loss to Liverpool last weekend after going down to ten men. When it was 11 vs 11 I really thought my boys had a chance of getting something out of the game, but it wasn’t to be.

Frank Lampard is still trying to work out his best 11 and formation etc with all the new signings. With Thiago, Chilwell, Ziyech and Pulisic all to come back into the side there’s no need to panic! Lampard’s the man and hopefully it’s for a very long time.

It’s going to be interesting whether new keeper Edouard Mendy goes straight into the side or Kepa keeps his place after all the mistakes in recent weeks. You all know my opinion on this………

West Brom have lost their first two games, and conceded 8 goals in the process. Things are not going to be any easier this time out, but the only thing I would say in their defence is that in Leicester, Everton and now Chelsea, they have started their season by playing three teams who will probably finish in the top eight.

We’ll find out what the Baggies are all about when they play teams who are likely to be bouncing around the bottom end of the table. They’re the games that West Brom need to be winning, anything in these sort of games are a bonus.

Burnley v Southampton – Saturday 20:00 Kick Off

Southampton finished last season full of confidence and thriving under manager Ralph Hasenhüttl. But after two defeats in two weeks, especially the dismantling by the hands of Tottenham last week it’s been a clear reality check for Hanenhüttl. This week he said the following:

“I think the end of last season seemed (as if it was) furthering our development, but now, after the break, we are absolutely not on the same level at the moment.”

“If you think you have done everything all right and we lose 5-2, then something is not right.”

Ralph Hasenhüttl

I’ve definitely seen enough in the first two games that makes me think they can look forward to improved results, starting at Burnley Saturday.

Burnley have also made a slow start to the season, and, no doubt, they would be more than satisfied with yet another Premier League survival. They are dealing with some injury problems to important players which makes me lean towards Saints taking all three points here.

Sheffield Utd v Leeds – Sunday 12:00 Kick Off

The job Marcelo Bielsa is doing at Leeds is phenomenal and they will surprise a few people with how well they’ll do this year. They are up and running points-wise after seeing off Fulham last week in an exhilarating 4 – 3 win. I can see them adding another 3 points this weekend as well against a struggling Sheffield Utd.

Both teams will get stuck in this game. Sheffield Utd have no goals and no points so far. The Blades finished last season in 9th position in the standings, but after a bad start securing survival has to be the team’s main goal for the 2020/21 campaign. Chris Wilder said in his press conference that he is expecting a competitive, tactical game with a lot of energy from both teams. It should be a good game for the neutral!

Tottenham v Newcastle – Sunday 14:00 Kick Off

Tottenham and Newcastle are both in the same boat. One very good performance and one very bad one too in the Premier league so far.

Spurs came from behind to dismantle Southampton in the second half last time out, showing they have got a big attacking threat this season. This is before you even add Bale into the fold.

‘Sonny’ as my Spurs mate says, is an absolute superstar and should at least be in the conversation as one of the best players in the league. He produced the most clinical performance I’ve seen from a winger in a very long time scoring four goals in the weekend’s clash. The way he links up with Kane as well is scary and if I was a Newcastle fan I’d be worried.

Newcastle had a bad day at the office against Brighton and seemed to forget the art of defending. With both Jamal Lewis and Allan Saint-Maximim suffering injury blows at the weekend, anything but a routine home win would be a major surprise here.

Manchester City v Leicester – Sunday 16:30 Kick Off

You could say it was ‘job well done’ for Manchester City at Wolves on Monday night in what could have been a banana skin game. Were months away from seeing City at their very best, due to lack of pre-season football. This week against Leicester could be another tricky fixture for them but I do see City coming out on top.

Leicester meanwhile have won two out of two so far in the Premier League but this hasn’t come at a cost. Wilfred Ndidi suffered an injury that looks to keep him out for up to 12 weeks best case scenario. He is the driving force behind most of Leicesters good performances and will be a big miss for them at the back, usually screening in front of the back four, breaking up attacks.

West Ham v Wolves – Sunday 19:00 Kick Off

New signing Nelson Semedo. Image Credit – Express & Star

Wolves are a proper football club with a board/owner that want to improve the team and become a big club.

Look when they sold Matt Doherty to Spurs I thought, here we go……. All the players had a great year last year and the board are going to cash in on them and they might buy a half decent replacement. Instead they did the complete opposite, they recouped £15 million for Doherty then went out and made a statement buying Nelson Semedo from Barcelona who is a young attacking full back with bags of potential.

In terms of this game if they create as many chances as they did in the game vs Manchester City, I don’t think they will end up empty-handed again this time.

West Ham need a win but they will have to try to get one without their manager David Moyes, who is self-isolating after testing positive for coronavirus. The Hammers were actually pretty decent in defeat against Arsenal last weekend, but I think a draw would be realistically what they should be hoping for from this one.

Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Draw 1 – 1

Fulham v Aston Villa – Monday 17:45 Kick Off

If Fulham don’t quickly sort it out at the back they’re going to get sucked into a downward spiral. There’s no way you can be conceding 7 goals in 2 games and hope to stay up, something needs to change. They can’t dwell on defeats as the next game comes round very quickly. They need to be more aggressive and in the words of Jose ‘C****” on the field if they’re going to kick start their season.

Aston Villa will fancy their chances, having made a promising start to their campaign against Sheffield United, with a win and a clean sheet. Be good to see Ollie Watkins get on the scoresheet after his transfer from Brentford.

Liverpool v Arsenal – Monday 20:00 Kick Off

This is the pick of the games this week. Liverpool go head to head at Anfield on Monday evening.

The Reds did well to beat ten-man Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, and they will be looking to keep their 100% record intact when they take on Arsenal. The attacking partnership of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane has been in a perfect working order at the start of the season. Combined with Thiago Alcantara coming into the side for his debut against Chelsea, they will be a real force once again this year. Thiago makes the game look so easy wherever he goes. What a player!

The Gunners kicked off the new Premier League campaign in style as well, by beating local rivals Fulham and West Ham United. They are looking rather impressive under Arteta who seems to have the team balance worked out.

I’d expect Liverpool to boss the possession in this game, which may play into Arsenal’s hands with the threat they carry on the counter attack. But I still worry about Arsenal at the back, so expect Liverpool to prove too much on the day for them.
