Just two days after the confirmed news of Saquon Barkleys season ending injury, the Giants have their replacement, in Devonta Freeman.
I was somewhat surprised to see Freeman go without getting picked up prior to the season getting started, but a groin injury in 2018, followed by a down year in 2019 maybe meant teams had their concerns. His stats show that he’s most definitely capable of elite things, and he’s got the Super Bowl experience to go with that!
Freeman was one of the elite backs in both the 2015 and 2016 seasons in the NFL, and was selected for the pro bowl in both years. Now, after spending 6 seasons with the Falcons, the 28 year old will look to reignite his career in the league, and give the Giants the support they now desperately need.
I’d expect to see Freeman get involved early, maybe even as soon as this Sunday against the 49ers. The Giants are still looking to pick up their first win of the season, and their matchup against an also injury plagues San Francisco team, with back up QB Nick Mullens starting, will be a tough one to call.
Good to see Devonta Freeman back in the league, and if we can see the pro bowl version of him from a couple of years ago, then the Giants might have picked up a gem. Low risk for both parties, and potentially high reward!
