Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21
Matchday 1 did not disappoint. What a start to the season. The Liverpool v Leeds game was unreal. Make sure you watch MOTD and catch up on it if you missed it. What an addition to the Premier League Leeds United will be if they play like that week in, week out.
So with week 2 of Anty’s Premier League Predictions we are going to change it up slightly. We are going to introduce a points system so we can look back and evaluate how we did.
We will keep it simple and easy to follow:
3 points – For predicting correct score
1 Point – For predicting correct result
Obviously 0 points for anything but the correct score or result. It will be good to test my football prediction skills. To top it off the Undrafted boys will be going up against each other by doing an accumulator bet on 4 randomly selected games every week. So stay tuned!
Everton v West Brom – Saturday 12:30 Kick Off
Everton put together one of their most complete performances on the road at one of the top six sides in a long, long time to come away from North London with a 1-0 win at Spurs.
Everton’s new signings took no time at all to adapt to the physicality and high tempo of the Premier League.
“The players who are able to play football don’t need a lot of time to adapt. James knows what he has to do, and Allan and Doucoure were the same. It is up to them to show their quality and I think they did”.Carlo Ancelotti
West Brom meanwhile, started well against Leicester and came close a few times to taking the lead. But as the game went on Leicester and Jamie Vardy were just too much on the day. Maybe they need to bring in a few more war veterans with Premier League experience.
For this game I can see Everton’s signings once again dominating proceedings with the quality they now have in their ranks. It’s going to be tough for West Brom to get anything out of this, especially without any of their fans in attendance to give them that extra boost they quite possibly need.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Everton to win 3 – 0
Leeds v Fulham – Saturday 15:00 Kick Off
This game excites me. Leeds United and Fulham, the two teams who returned to the Premier League, face each other at Elland Road. Both will be wanting to get their first wins of the season.
Leeds produced a thrilling display in the season opener but just fell short of spoiling Liverpool’s party at Anfield. The way they play, they will cause a lot of problems to their opponents. Marcelo Bielsa’s men aim to make amends for the 4-3 loss, and they are likely to go all guns blazing at Fulham to make sure this happens.
The Cottagers, on the other hand, experienced all sorts of problems at the back in a 3-0 loss to Arsenal. Unless they address this issue whilst the summer transfer window is still open, then I can’t see them avoiding relegation come the end of the season.
Going on what we saw week 1 I can only see this one ending with a Leeds win.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Leeds 2 – 0
Manchester United v Crystal Palace – Saturday 17:30 Kick Off
For Manchester United last season it took the January arrival of Bruno Fernandes to really turn the team’s fortunes around, with Solskjaer also developing an identifiable style of play. United finished their Premier League campaign with a 14-match unbeaten run, something they have exceeded only once since Ferguson’s exit.
We are yet to see them in action this year, as they were gifted a break week 1 because of their Europa League run last year….which ended in utter disappointment. They have since added Ajax midfielder Van de Beek. If Van de Beek has even half the initial impact Fernandes had, he will make a significant difference to an already stacked midfield.
Manchester United will be looking to kick off the new Premier League in style when they host Crystal Palace at their Old Trafford. With the aim of closing the gap between Liverpool and Manchester City they can not afford any slip ups early on.
Crystal Place will be pleased with their first week outing having beaten a good Southampton side with a a hard-fought 1-0. Palace, however, are one of the teams I’ve chosen to go down this year and I don’t see my opinion changing. If Zaha goes or doesn’t score where are the goals coming from? One things for sure it’s not Benteke. That guys been stealing a living for years.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Manchester United to win 3 – 0
Arsenal v West Ham – Saturday 20:00 Kick Off
It’s been a great week for Arsenal both on and off the field. Firstly, they managed to brush off Fulham with a convincing 3 – 0 win with summer signing Willian providing two assists for his teammates on his Arsenal debut. Then following the win, Arsenal fans were greeted with the news that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has a signed a new deal with the club ending all speculation of him moving on. To be honest this is bigger than the 3 points against Fulham, he’s absolutely clinical in front of goal and without him you’d worry for them.
The Hammers, on the other hand, failed to impress in the season opener, with the team suffering a 2-0 home loss to Newcastle. Moyes needs to get Antonio back firing on all cylinders for them bubbles to blow again.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Arsenal to win 2 – 1
Southampton v Tottenham – Sunday 12:00 Kick Off
Sunday’s football game at St. Mary’s Stadium pits together Southampton and Tottenham, the two teams who failed to impress in their season openers.
Spurs were absolutely terrible against Everton. Jose would have been banging his head against a brick wall after the game wondering where it all went wrong. I would say lack of pre-season but everyone is in the same boat. They looked so off the pace and were punished by a new look Everton side.
The only positive to come out of Spurs this week was the news that Gareth Bale is returning to the club on what looks like a loan deal. As I am writing this, he seems to be on a private jet to finalise the deal. This is a stellar bit of business from the club as Bale still has a lot to offer at 31 years old. It’s going to be amazing seeing him back in the Premier League and it will be interesting to see how Jose utilises him. Spurs will hope he lightens the goal burden on Harry Kane and takes them to the next level.
Southampton likewise were beaten by Crystal Palace in London at the weekend, but it has to be noted that they failed to turn their dominance into goals. I do think they’ll give Spurs a tough game and won’t make it easy for them especially knowing they played Thursday night in the Europa League.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Spurs to win 2 – 1
Newcastle v Brighton – Sunday 14:00 Kick Off
The Magpies did well to beat West Ham in London in their opener, meaning that they are high on spirits ahead of the visit of Brighton. Summer signing Callum Wilson also impressed on his Newcastle debut. The former Bournemouth man is likely to prove a handful for the Seagulls as well. Steve Bruce is slowly building the foundations to achieve something special at Newcastle and with the backing of usually reserved Mike Ashley he has more tools in his chest.
Seeing that Newcastle impressed in the opening match of the season, I predict that the visitors are going to return home empty-handed. Brighton looked good in parts against Chelsea on Monday night but you don’t win games like that unless you have the defence to soak up the pressure. They seem a long way away from putting together a complete 90 minute performance.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Newcastle 3 – 1
Chelsea v Liverpool – Sunday 16:30 Kick Off
My new look Chelsea team didn’t look how I wanted it to at the back when we lined up against Brighton. The back four Lampard named was the same defence as last year that leaked goals left, right and centre which was worrying. Christensen and Alonso just scare me at the back and should be no where near the starting 11. They may be good with the ball at their feet but turning back and running towards their own goal it’s a shit show.
Had Brighton been more clinical on the day they could have easily come away with three points in that game. Testament to the team though they dug in and a wonder goal from Reece James was enough to decide the result in Chelsea’s favour.
The result of this one this weekend all depends on how far away from fitness and covid eligible Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell are. If these two can push to start this game then Liverpool showed frailties against Leeds that gives me hope that we can possibly get a big result at home here. These are exactly the games that Thiago has been brought in for, to help organise a leaky back four.
We saw the best and the worst from Liverpool in their game against Leeds. Maybe it was just first game cobwebs that needed blowing off but they definitely haven’t looked the same since wrapping up the Premier League title last year. Klopp will know though, the teams that are remembered when we look back in 10/20 years are the ones that can motivate themselves to go again and again, not taking their foot off the accelerator. Winning back to back titles and dominating the English game.
With the front three Liverpool have and the form Salah has started the season in they’ll always have a chance of repeating last years feat. Hopefully not 🙏 but they can’t be underestimated.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Draw 2 – 2 (but if Thiago and Chilwell start Chelsea to win 2 – 1).
Leicester v Burnley – Sunday 19:00 Kick Off
Leicester City will be looking to build on their 3-0 win over West Bromwich Albion when they take on Burnley at King Power Stadium.
They started slow and seemed vulnerable at the back against West Brom for the first half hour but Jamie Vardy picked up from where he left off last term. The experienced striker scored a brace in the season opener, and he is likely to prove a handful for Burnley defenders as well.
Burnley, on the other hand, were not in action at the weekend. But, you pretty much know what to expect from them. A hard to beat, well drilled outfit.
My money’s on Jamie Vardy continuing his fine start to the season.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Leicester to win 1 – 0
Aston Villa v Sheffield United – Monday 18:00 Kick Off
Villa start their campaign again with one aim…stay up. Jack Grealish signed a new 5 year contract this week so Villa will be boosted by this news. Jack will be looking to perform on a more consistent basis this year to make a claim for a place in Gareth Southgate’s England side.
The Blades were playing above expectations last term, and, as a result, they secured a top-ten finish. They would have been working hard on the train field this week, trying to rediscover that form.
I can see this one being a stalemate, as both sides look to put a point at the very least on the board early doors.
Anty’s Premier League Predictions 20/21: Draw 0 – 0
Wolves v Manchester City – Monday 20:15 Kick Off
This is a BIG, BIG season for Pep. I’m absolutely intrigued to see how his team fare against a side they suffered back-to-back defeats to last season. City will be on a quest to regain the Premier League title and games like this will go a long way to decide where the trophy will end up come May. Summer signings Nathan Ake and Ferran Torres are likely to make their Man City debut against Wolverhampton.
Wolves, on the other hand, did well to add the likes of Marcal, Vitinha, Fabio Silva, and Matija Sarkic to the squad in the summer transfer window. The Molineux Stadium has turned into a real fortress in recent times and this will not be an easy game for City.
Anty’s Premier League Prediction 20/21: City to win 2 – 0
