Chelsea Must Replace Kepa

This is not a question, this is a statement; Chelsea must replace Kepa! The man came with a hefty price tag of 71.6 million and has quite frankly (pardon the pun) not saved a bloody thing all season. It genuinely feels that way though, every shot the opposition has seems to rifle into the back of the net.

We’ve gone from club legend Petr Cech, to world class Courtois to a keeper named Kepa Arrizabalaga. The former Bilbao man has the worst save rate among any other Premier League goalkeeper at just 55.4%. Owing to this, Chelsea have managed only 8 clean sheets this season. He’s not fully to blame for some of the results this year as our defence doesn’t fill you with much confidence these days but sometimes you need your keeper to step up to the mark. He’s the last line of the defence, supposedly the leader at the back. Everything happens in front of him. The more confident and assuring he is from corners etc. the more the defence grows in confidence. This will lead to them performing better as a unit. Its not rocket science!

I’m unsure who the board can realistically look at replacing Kepa with. Or whether they’ll be able to recoup much of the fee that they paid for him back in 2018. But I speak for 99% of Chelsea fans in saying they must replace Kepa. Frank Lampard has shown this season he’s not scared to utilise youth and inexperienced players in the first team but he knows if he is serious about making a title charge or having a good run in Europe next season then he needs a consistent shot stopper between the sticks. Lampard may get longer than most in the Chelsea hot seat because of his relationship with the club. However, he knows he can’t commit his tenure to trying to nurture Kepa into the world class keeper Chelsea thought they’d invested in and given a 7 year deal.

Gianlugin Donnarumma, Andre Onana and Jan Oblak are just a few of the touted targets who could improve the Chelsea goalkeeper spot next season. We will have to wait and see how this plays out. If Kepa is our keeper next year then so be it. I’ll give him my support but no doubt unless something drastically happens I’ll be ranting again in Summer 2021.
