Michael Bennett Retiring

That man was an Undrafted free agent, overlooked and underbooked. 11 years later he’s hanging it up. Hell of a career Michael Bennett, i tip my hat to you sir.

Bennett was undrafted out of Texas A&M back in 2009, due to some inconsistencies in his game (apparently, this is before my time as a football fan chill), before he was picked up by the Seahawks. He made the final roster going into the season, before he was waived in October.

Two days later he got scooped up by the Tampa Bay Bucs, where he spent three seasons. Bennett had his best season in 2012, boosting his stock in free agency. It was his destiny to head back to Seattle, so it would seem.

Bennetts career took off in Seattle. In his first season back, the Seahawks went 13-3, with the most dominant defence in the league. Of course, they went on to smash the Broncos in the Super Bowl, and Bennett claimed himself a ring. After initially signing a one year deal, and following an incredibly successful year, the Seahawks resigned him to a four year, $28.5 million contract.

They made their way back to the Super Bowl in 2014, but we all know how that ended. The name Malcolm Butler will haunt those boys forever.

Bennett bounced around the league in the last three seasons, spending a year in Philly, a short stop in New England, and finally last season in Dallas. At the age of 34, the vet is hanging it up.

Michael Bennett notched 359 tackles, 69.5 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, and 1 touchdown. Plus three pro bowl appearances, and a ring. A great career for a great character who never wore his jersey properly. Iconic.

Check out Bennett’s best NFL season, landing at 59th in the NFL’s top 100.
