News just broke that Bertans, the 27 year old Latvian power forward, will sit out the NBA’s planned restart in Orlando. Bertans is set to be a free agent at the end of this season, and although forfeiting around 600,000 dollars by missing 8 games, will likely sign a significantly higher contract than that sum at the end of the season, so it makes sense for Bertans sitting out to avoid the chance of injury, especially having had multiple ACL injuries in the past.
Is this the start of a trend?
The problem with this is that although the Wizards aren’t going to affect the final outcome of the Orlando event, the likes of Kyrie Irving have already expressed their concern for it going ahead at all. If multiple players start doing this, the asterix that will already be placed next to this years NBA champions in the history books, will only grow larger. Bertans sitting out is the first i’ve seen but i’m sure there will be others to follow who are also banking on banking some cash through new deals in the off season, whenever that is.
There is already speculation over how the NBA is going to reward teams who should be due a home court advantage, considering extra timeouts, having possession to start three quarters among other things. But none of the above will quite match up to thousands of fans jeering your opponents while they try to concentrate and shoot free throws etc.
Let’s see how the whole thing plays out, but what we don’t want, and pardon the pun here, is for the whole tournament to become… WAIT
…a Mickey Mouse event. Excellent. Signing off. I win today.
